About Us - Who We Are - What We Do
Whether it takes a week, a month, a year, or more, we care for all our homeless pets until they are adopted.
For pets who have special medical needs, we provide the medication and veterinary care needed. For behavioral issues, we provide extra time and attention as well as additional training to increase their socialization skills that will help them find the right home.
When in the best interests of the animals, we may transfer an animal to a breed specific rescue group that can better handle the special needs of certain breeds.
We may also transfer an animal that has been at the shelter for a long period of time to another "no kill" shelter that can give the animal a larger exposure area and a better chance at adoption.
Roice-Hurst is a "No Kill" animal shelter, providing loving care for homeless dogs and cats.
Our "No Kill" policy means that we do not euthanize healthly, adoptable animals because of a lack of space or resources.
Like any responsible pet owner, euthanization is considered only as a last resort- as when animals suffer from untreatable medical conditions and are in severe pain.or have severe and intractable behavioral issues - and only after consultation and upon recommendation of a licensed veterinarian.
In other words, we euthanize only when it's the most humane course for the animal, never when it's the most expedient course for the shelter.
Unfortunately, we do have limited space and resources, and cannot take every animal who comes to our door. One of our major and immediate goals is to expand our facility and foster program so that we can accept more animals into the shelter and provide more foster homes for our area's homeless pets.
Our Vision includes a place available to every animal, and an adoption and forever home for every animal who comes to our door.
Roice-Hurst is a 501(c) 3 non-profit corporation and receives NO government funding. We are 100% funded by private donations, memberships, grants, and sponsorships.
In August of last year, a new Board of Directors took over the management of the shelter. With a can-do attitude and a hands-on management style, the new board along with a dedicated, and hard working group of volunteers and generous supporters have made great strides in improving the shelter.
Last July, at the height of the oil and gas boom, the shelter almost closed due to a lack of funding.
A building in disrepair, a mountain of unpaid bills, an empty food bin, and kennels and cages full of animals was all that remained of a 46 year legacy of saving lives.
A call for help went out, and the community responded. Donations came in - animals were fed, bills were paid, repairs were made, and living conditions were improved for the animals.
In the face of incredible challenges, great strides have been made. Yet, more needs to be done, and times are tough. The economy is down, jobs have been lost, people are moving, and more pets are surrendered.
We Still Need Your Support
Roice-Hurst exists solely for the benefit of the community and its homeless animals. If Roice-Hurst is to continue to provide and expand its 46 year mission of saving lives, the entire community must take ownership of this life saving organization.
As the only no kill shelter on the western slope, providing for both dogs and cats, and as a community of people who care for the animals, we must ask ourselves:
Where would these precious pets be,
if not for Roice-Hurst?
The Shelter cannot survive without the regular and continued support of the community. By combining our resources and giving only what you can afford, but on a regular basis, we CAN continue to save lives!
Our Sponsor A Pet program lets you give as little as $10.00 a month to help us feed the animals.
If you can give $15 or $20 a month, this helps pay the utility bills and meet animal medical expenses. It costs an average of $350.00 to care for each animal who comes to our door. Regular monthly donations allow us to budget our expenses
and plan for future needs with confidence.
We are asking for the support of the community to help us fulfill our vision of providing a sanctuary for every homeless animal that comes to our door. A vision of finding each and every one a Forever Home.
